MyLife is a digital health coaching platform and research study that empowers people and care teams to work together to improve health and quality of life.

What Can Patients Expect from Our Program?

UCLA primary care doctors identify and refer patients to our program if they feel they meet our eligibility criteria. When enrolled, patients will be placed into one of two groups: either Fitbit + Health Coach or Fitbit only.

Patients in both groups will receive a Fitbit Charge 2 device and will complete short surveys over the course of the 16-week program.  Those placed into the Fitbit + Health Coach group will also receive the support of a personalized health coach who is ready to help the patient achieve his/her health goals. These health coaches use proven behavior change techniques, real-time data analytics from Fitbit activity trackers, automated text messaging, semi-structured surveys, and biweekly teleconferencing over 16 weeks to build rapport with patients and motivate them to adopt and maintain healthier lifestyles.

Patients will be able to keep the Fitbit after the program, as long as they adhere to and complete all program components.

Why MyLife?

Managing diabetes, hypertension and other lifestyle-related chronic diseases is challenging, time-consuming, and costly for healthcare systems. In fact, lifestyle-related chronic diseases take 450,000 lives and cost $2.25 trillion annually.  Patients at risk for lifestyle-related chronic diseases visit their primary care physician roughly four times per year. However, research suggests only frequent, personalized, and timely care helps patients adopt and maintain healthy behaviors.

We have recognized these challenges and partnered with faculty and students across UCLA to develop the MyLife clinical research program. The MyLife program has been refined over three PDSA cycles with great success. Patients who were at early risk for lifestyle-related chronic diseases and enrolled by their primary care doctor into the 16-week MyLife program:

  • Increased their physical activity by more than 60 minutes per week

  • Responded to 70% of messages

  • Lost on average 4% of their body weight

These results suggest that our trained coaches can utilize wearable device data and validated behavior change techniques to improve clinical outcomes and help patients live a healthier, happier life.

In the next phase of our work, we are now actively enrolling patients into our UCLA Health multi-site randomized controlled trial to compare health behavior change among patients who have the support of a MyLife health coach plus a Fitbit Charge 2 device vs those with a Fitbit Charge 2 device alone.
